A few weeks ago, my wife went out in our yard at sunset and took a picture of something that was not the setting sun :o :o :o HOW AUDACIOUS!!!

This got me thinking that maybe the setting sun isn't the only thing worth taking pictures of at sunset. The light cast by the setting sun can be very striking, especially when it's shining on subjects which might otherwise seem mundane in ordinary light. So today when the sun was setting, I turned 180 degrees away from the sun and took pictures of other stuff instead.

Stairway To Our House

South Hero Ferry

I also played with placing the focus on different planes to see which one was more appealing... still not sure:

Infinity

Close Focus

The moral of the story? Sunset pictures sure can be pretty, but I got to a point where taking more of the same sunset pictures was getting old. There's more to sunsets than fiery water reflections. Photography is all about light, and the light cast by sunsets can be a wonderful inspirational tool.

You rebel!

This reminds me of Henri Cartier-Bresson who was hired to photograph the coronation of King George VI and took not one picture of the king! He saw art in everything and everyone that observed the spectacle rather than the spectacle itself.

Good job!

Hey, where's all the snow?

You could also do back-lit images using the setting sun as the light source.

'Sunset Silhouettes' sort of thing.

Irony of ironies, we've had mild weather and almost no snow all winter, right up until 2 days ago when we got a foot of snow and bitter cold temperatures. We're expecting more snow over the coming week than we've had all winter long.

I've done similar things already, although I definitely plan to explore that aspect more:

I wish I had a decent comment here. Do I like the thoughts on this and am interested to see where it's going.
