here I go again
I've been to Berlin last week, took many digital images and a single slide film roll (which I only finished back home, hence the photos below). Now for the tale: I noticed something unusual when the frame counter reached 40 and I thought I might had screwed up the film loading, though that seemed unlikely as it is a fairly modern camera (Pentax MZ-5). To my displeasure, I found that the developed film has many frames overlapping each other (usually just the borders so they are mostly usable but some are pretty bad), and if that wasn't enough, about a dozen of the scans I got from the lab are cut right in the middle of the frame!! any one knows what may be the cause to this? (I previously used the same camera with black and white film and it performed well) Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

I really like your street photos Pablo.
You mentioned you used a 1.8/55 lens. Which one is that? |

Hey guys, I had some not at all nice times recently, hence my unnoticeable absence. I bring to you some captures from a film exposed last month. It's Fuji 400H. I used a Minolta HI-MATIC 11, an old 70's rangefinder, feels nice but doesn't offer much exposure control/range. It is my grandfather's so I like using it.
I'll try a few different films to see what I like, I have Fuji 160C next, any one knows if it's any good? I think I'll try slides later, maybe Velvia, I've never used that before. I'll probably get a new camera too. I'm in a period of trying things I guess. Sorry for the shitty scans First few from Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I love the feel of the film vs. digital.
The reds and greens are pretty bright but the blues and greens seem muted. But that's okay. I have a few old rangefinders but never seem to drag them out any more. Thanks for showing us these pics. I hope to see more of Israel soon. |

I'm not very good differentiating colors. Thanks for looking |

It wasn't far, and certainly no accident. I was very lucky. Hey guys, I had some not at all nice times recently, hence my unnoticeable absence. Oh I noticed! I was on the verge of asking if one of those rockets hit you on the head by accident... |

A few more from the market, and then I'll move on
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In general, these are not processed beyong how I got them from the lab, with the exception of a slight crop here and there. the above photo on the other hand has some noise reduction applied to it, below is the same photo without NR. does it add/detract? ![]() |

I prefer the noise-reduced version. Somehow, the noisy version looks more like digital noise than film frain, it's not flattering the way some film grain can be.

I agree with FP on the photo of the bottles. The shot with NR seems more like film, but the second image looks like some I've seen online with fake "snow".
I love seeing your street photos Pablo, you're really getting an eye for composing a photo to draw attention to your subject. |

Nice to see you carrying on experimenting with the film, Pablo. You got some nice market shots.
While I haven't used Fuji 400H, I can make a few comments about it based on my experience with this category, which includes Kodak Portra 400. Higher end fast color negative film is pretty much all moderate contrast stock. The reasons for this get complicated, historical and also skewed by modern develop & scan workflow, but the short answer is fast color negs really isn't the place to go if you want punch. It's a medium for subtly. Velvia is the go-to film for high color saturation and contrast, but it's ISO 100 slide film, so you're not really going to be able to use it the same way you use 400H. Provia 400 is the only game in town for fast slide film and might be worth a shot if you're wanting to continue to experiment with color film in street shooting. Regarding the bottles, you're facing the common problem with lab scans: software presets that are overcompensating for dark areas in the image. The lab machines are over-brightening the blacks, which brings out ugly grain. My personal solution to this was to scan my own negs. Even using a humble Epson flatbed with transparency options gave me better results since I had control over the software. |

Thank you guys for your comments and input.
I agree something looks wrong with the scan. I am planning to use a different lab next time. Thanks Leigh for sugesting provia, i will certanly look around for it, but I have no expectations regarding availability around here. Usually I look in a couple of local stores to see what is in stock, which varies every time, and I pick up what I find interesting and is reasonably priced to me (usually it's expired film). Many times I end up empty handed. ATM I'm on my way back from vacation. Will post something later/ tomorrow. |

On a side note, can anyone recommend a film scanner for ocasional home use that is also moderetly priced? (by that I mean cheap)
