The Friendly Photo Zone Crappy Point & Shoot Shootout!
(AKA – POS P&S Shootout)

We love ‘em, we hate ‘em, we hide ‘em in boxes in our closets.
They are some of our first digital cameras; the ones that lead us to our expensive fancy, schmancy DSLR’s. It’s your once beloved but now much maligned, old-school point and shoot digi camera. But if we believe our own hype, “it isn’t the camera, it’s the photographer”. So charge up those batteries, scrape the dust off the lenses it’s time to put your money where your mouth is and take some awesome pictures with your crappy old P&S digicam.

The Rules:
The camera has to be more than 3 years old. So, 2008 is the latest model year acceptable.
You can only use one camera for this shootout; pick your best POS P&S!
Just for fun and posterity take a picture of your crappy P&S camera and post it with your first submission. We want to see it!
There will be 3 categories for submissions and judgment; close up/macro, landscape and portrait.
There has to be limits so we will accept 3 images in each category from each submitter.
Please label each submitted image with the category and a title. Have fun – be creative with the titles!
The contest will start on Saturday Aug. 21, 2011 and end on midnight EST Sept. 11, 2011.
Keep all the submissions in this thread please.

So grab your cameras, start shooting and have some fun!

Both the P&Ss are somewhere in the boys room :[ I may need shovels and rakes but I'll find em. Sounds like fun Jeff!

My first P&S that genuinely belonged to me was a Nikon Coolpix 995, purchased in April 2002.

Frankly, it's not a lot less awesome now than it was then. The main reason I don't use it is that the batteries have pretty much gone belly up and there's no RAW capability. If there was RAW capability, I'd gladly pay up for a new battery. I've printed lovely 8x10's from its humble 3mp files.

If I can dig out a battery that hold sufficient charge for practical use, I'll participate. I've already used it a couple years ago in a personal version of the "it's not the equipment..." exercise. My selected results are here: Six Shots in 7 Days

hey wait a minute, I remember the Coolpix 995! It was a fantastic camera, highly revered in its day. Somehow that doesn't seem fair :p

Well, I had to borrow this from my wife. It was her first P&S camera. Full disclosure - I bought it off of the home shopping network in about 2004. She used until 2007.

I just realized that one category missed in the list is worst use of flash or from another perspective, the best use of red eye you've ever seen. I mean truly, you have to love the flash systems on these puppies. Worth adding a special competition for best red eye or worst flash?

My weapon of choice will be the world famous Canon S3 IS:

GORE8826.jpg

It was originally released in 2006. With a 12x zoom lens (36-432mm equiv) and 6mp sensor, this camera was our first real attempt at becoming "photography enthusiasts". It even has a SUPER MACRO mode which allows it to focus on things that are actually TOUCHING the front lens element!!!

And if that isn't enough, I've got a trick up my sleeve! There's a custom open source operating system running on this camera, courtesy of the CHDK project. This operating system allows me to do previously-unheard-of things, like a 1/100,000 second shutter speed (with flash sync at any speed), infinite auto bracketing with any parameter (including focus bracketing), and fine grained ISO selection from 1 to 800 in increments of 1!!! (ie. 1, 2, 3, etc up to 800) It can do a few other nifty things, too. Things most cameras can only dream of ever achieving. It even adds RAW format support where there previously was none.

So watch out!

I wish I could find my old Canon PowerShot S100 Digital ELPH, which was given to me back in 2001. Alas, I cannot remember what became of that old gem.

I apologize for my early insistence on having standards. ;)
