Just announced today, Hoya has sold off Pentax cameras to Ricoh.

They are the orphans of the camera manufacturers; they have no home. :~(

Interesting, it is said here that it was sold for £77 million. didn't Hoya pay like a billion USD in 2008? I know some of Pentax's optical departments merged with Hoya and thus were not sold, but it still seems like a huge loss.

May actually be a good thing for Pentax shooters. Allthough I love my camera bodies I've certainly not been impressed with the way Hoya ran things.
Sure am glad I bought all those cheap lenses especially the ones easily adapted to other systems.
Only time will tell but for now I'll be taking my NewCos to shoot a baseball tournament. :w00t:

The big money-making part of Pentax was the medical imaging division. It's worth lots of money, and it never stopped making money. The camera division was just a tiny part of what Hoya bought for $1b. And if I remember right, they never really wanted the camera division in the first place. It was just kinda foisted on them as a condition of buying out the rest. I bet they actually made a profit at £77m.

Interesting. This could be good for Pentax users. Time will tell if a printer company can do what is required to compete with the big guys. Could get interesting. JIM

I remember my Dad got a Ricoh 35mm camera as a retirement gift in the early '80's.
I thought it way better than my new but humble ME Super (at the time).
