Tired of taking boring, old colour digital pictures and all the steps of post-processing that goes with it to make them into exciting black and white images? Well have I got a camera for you! Check out the new Leica M - which takes digital images only in black and white. The concept is not only interesting but damned expensive! How about $8K!

Check it out here.

Thanks for posting this. I saw something on this yesterday and as anyone knows the word Leica is German for "way more money than I will ever have," and passed on. This camera is very cool for sure but for $8k, I could 1) get my two 1930's era Leica bodies cleaned and lenses de-fungused, 2) buy a much higher end image scanner and decent printer, and 3) buy a whole lotta film. The result of all of that would be a 35mm full frame black and white camera system and about $5-6k left over. Interesting thought...

Removing the Bayer filter array from a camera's sensor has been discussed on many occasions throughout the Internet, and it's very interesting to see that a company has finally gone ahead and done it. I can't wait to see what kind of output this camera gives. Of course, I never really considered the downsides to recording B&W images directly from the sensor before. Since there's no colour information, there's no way to adjust which colours show up dark and which ones show up bright. You're essentially stuck with the tonal information you captured. So I guess colour filters become relevant again.

edit: I'll never own one of these cameras

Yes, it's likely that I would not tend to buy a camera that would cost more than the combined value of all the cars that I own...

The new Leica Monochrom costs $2000 less than all our vehicles combined! What a deal!!!

From XE.com

$10,000.00 CAD = $9,998.50 USD

The difference would be $1.50. :D

Your priorities are all messed up.
Putting practicability ahead of your hobby is just wrong. ;)

I had some liking for the idea of a sensor tuned specifically for monochrome output, but I think it's rather unfortunate Leica was the first to make it a reality.

The B&W only digital camera was going to be a niche product no matter what, but in Leica's hands, ├╝ber boutique. Few M9's are sold and even fewer monochrome variants are going to sell. The entry cost (especially if you're not already a Leica shooter with lenses) are just too high for anybody but the most devoted (and or rich) to throw down the cash. None of those groups encompass me, and I'm more interested than average.

If it was Fuji, Olympus or Panasonic that announced a mono-only model, I'd be a lot more interested there'd be a snowball's chance the company might make a customer of me over it. A monochrome M9 though? No chance.
