Thanks to JIMBO for nominating me to host the next "The Week that Was" I'm giving extra days, since today is almost over, and Tuesday and Wednesday are hard for me to get on the computer. So by Thursday next week I can go through the images. That's the tough part, but I can't wait to see the images.

Rules are the same as previous weeks. They can be found here.

Because I've been a little sick the past couple days, this is the latest pic I took, from 1/7.

Woohoo! First reply!

So yesterday I finally took out my camera gear and tried to do some serious photography. First real opportunity I've had since we moved to our new house in Vermont. It felt great to finally spend time with the camera.

I also experimented with the fancy flash I got as a Christmas present to help give foreground objects more detail than just a black silhouette.

Goodbye, Sun

(this one could've used a filter on the flash to make it less white)

cute little computer, Dan. Not the computer, i mean the one who is computing.

FP - these are gorgeous! I love the light and colors and your compositions are very pleasing. Put my vote on #3 which is a beautiful scene. Actually, I can't decide, #1 has the 3D look and wonderful foreground. These are all three great. That flash is doing the job!

I took a hike yesterday with BCB, Amanda(ThePandaKnows), Katie(not on FPZ) and Matt(not on FPZ). We hit the south side of Mare Island just in time for sunset.

Tim was kind enough to lend me his 120mm lens for this one, thanks Tim!

Wow, FP and Mike - way to go and two variations on the sunset theme. Yummy colors all.

The light painting came out well too - hey I had a side light flashlight in there too but it was Mike's red headlamp that gave this some color. Way to go.

Edit - FP I love your hot and cold shot the best, it's just a brilliant composition. Excellent.

Ok, though I'd better toss out a few infrared shots from the weekend.

Ten: Phase 2 by Leighgion, on Flickr

I bought a proper tripod a couple weeks ago, which finally got me 'round to taking another night shot of my lovely view of dorm ten, this time with my fisheye on full frame as it was meant to be used.

Now, onto the more fun stuff.

I am seldom doing posed portraits not only because I prefer working candid, but also because it is my luck to be surrounded by people who do not want their photo taken. Ironically, it was Ali, my Beijing little sister and certainly the most reserved and camera shy girl I know in Beijing, who agreed to let me photograph her. This was after I made fun of her ridiculously lame Facebook profile photo which is a long shot in a canyon that could've been any two people.

This was my subject's own favorite of the day based on camera back previews.

Ali of Silence by Leighgion, on Flickr

This is my personal favorite of the day.

For someone who doesn't do posed portrait photography often, you sure have a knack for it. I think your penchant towards candids is reflected in your staged work in a positive way. Both of those turned out great, and they each have a very different mood.

I got up at the crack of dawn this morning to try and get some early blue-hour shots. I wasn't really prepared for it (I only got up because I had trouble getting back to sleep), so I didn't get much done. But I did walk away with this shot that I was happy with:

Nothing But Cold

That's some serious thermally solidified dihyrogen oxide, Frank. I always was disappointed the beaches back home in Washington never froze. I've since gotten over that with my understanding of just how cold it needs to be.

We've been having a very mild winter so far. Some years, the entire lake would be frozen solid by now. Some people walk across it to get from Vermont to New York.

FP: is that Lake Champlain? Need to get up that way, so close, yet so far away... (I've been finding so little time to travel)

Like the pics so far, enjoyed the partially frozen lake beach, and Leighgion's portraits. For some reason I'm digging the portrait where the sun was flaring a bit.

One from yesterday, testing out new generic manual flash my wife bought me for Christmas.
Fired it into a pile of leaves as he was taking a video.
