I got up at 4:30am yesterday to meet a couple of guys at the bay bridge for a sunrise, but on hitting the road and checking email, the meetup was canceled due to 100% cloud cover over San Fran. So, I headed southwest toward the coast and Half Moon Bay with no idea where to go but just hoping to find a cloud break for a morning sky pic. That didn't exactly work out but I did happen upon this fascinating beach just around the point from Mavericks, the famous surf spot. There is a lovely reef and tide was low enough to walk out on the long rock bars to explore the many tidepools filled with sea life.

A Star Is Borne

With the extra distance traveled from home, I realized i'd be late meeting up with my wife and kids for some shopping in Concord, so fast mike had to motor up Hwy 1 in my usual manner...

Later that day, I was off to shoot a jazz trio at a club in Napa, CA. As i pulled my tripod from the trunk, sea water came dripping out so i decided not to bring that in, and shot handheld instead.

thanks. did you notice the sea star in the first image too? look near the lower left rule-of-thirds intersection point. He's waving at you.

BTW, this photo is not for the weekly judging, but it will give you an idea how rich those tidepools were; here, several anemonae await the return of the tide.

not for TW3

I could not find a composition i liked, so this became more of a snapshot.

Mike I love a star is born! That touch of pink is just great. And no I missed him the first time around. Wonderful job hand holding the camera for the club shot. Really nicely done. Love the rich colors too. Sounds like you had a very busy day!

Whoa, it's good to be back to posting and not hosting. I think we've seen the last of Bowling Ball Beach for a while. However, Mike I'm lovin' your new stuff. One wonders if you ever sleep but you must one day of the week or so, I'm sure. Love your star is borne shot because it has the added dimension of being able to see into the water. Very cool extras in that shot.

Spent a lot of the past weekend doing elder care stuff but I managed to get out Sunday with a local photo Meetup group for a rainy day shoot at Jack London State Park in the Valley of the Moon (home of the author Jack London of Call of the Wild fame). I've been there a number of times and I'm still discovering things there. The drippy skies added some nice challenges but...that's why having a WR body/lens is a good thing and no plastic hoody thing needed. Ok, I did need one for the 6x7 but the K5 was just fine.

So here are a few from Sunday.

(Not for judging) If you use the lens correction tools in Lightroom on an image like the previous one, strange things happen.

Honestly, I prefer the uncorrected version.

Great start to the week already. RM, that's a perfect portrait of that young lady.

Mike: Happy accident finding those tide pools, I didn't spot the starfish in the first shot either until you mentioned it, but your composition of the 2nd shot with the dash of pink is excellent. Nice Jazz set too and hope your tripod doesn't suffer any permanent damage.

Tim: There's a nice sense of a rainy day in all of your shots. I like the adjusted fisheye, makes for an interesting resulting photo. And "Psst" might be my favourite.

Sorry I haven't gotten around to posting the latest TW3 winner on the front page, I'll get around to it ASAP, I promise!

Yesterday was a fantastic sunset, and today was a good day for photo opportunities. We had a lot of fun at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company and Shelburne Farms with J.Scott and his wife. Here are some of my better keepers:

Great shots in the old round barn Tim. I've been slummin' around rural establishments here in Vermont. FP and tiffpix are great hosts and we've been having a lot of fun. Once I get back home this weekend I'll sift through my shots and have a few submissions of my own this week.

(I think I pissed off that llama with my flash. He was freakin' me out with his toothy stare! He was guarding a flock of sheep and didn't take too kindly to the paparazzi.)
