i havent processed all my pics from our trip, but i'll put up a couple and add in a third later.

No Picnic

The Salton Sea, California's largest lake, is a tragic yet fascinating place. Once a thriving resort destination; now succumbing to a series of unfortunate ecological factors and a lack of public & political support to save it.

I arrived while it was still dark and just made my way to the waterfront on the west shore without knowing what i'd find. I set up my tripod to shoot this picnic bench and as the first light hit the ground, i was surprised to find the beach riddled with hundreds of dead fish, fish heads, scales, bones, barnacles, and who knows what else. If you imagine there'd be a strong odor here, you'd be quite correct. It was pretty nasty.

I thought about the family vacationers who may have once sat at this bench to enjoy lunch and a great afternoon...this ain't that.

here is a brief documentary about Salton Sea on YouTube:

Interesting story Mike and I really like the image. A good image tells a story and the video helped me feel the image more. Looks like a interesting place to shoot and look forward to seeing more Mike. JIM

2 more pics:

Salton Sea (mono)

This spot is 226 ft below sea level, btw. The stench was vile.

My understanding is that the water has 25% higher salinity than the ocean and the steady evaporation without recharge continues to increase that concentration. Additionally, the warm weather brings algae blooms which decreases oxygen from the water, killing fish by the thousands. The site is visited by a wide array of birds, many use Salton Sea as a stopover during migration.

High Desert

Shot from the northern area of Joshua Tree Nat'l Park looking southwest over the coachella valley (Palm Springs, Palm Desert, etc). This spot is at 5,185 ft elevation.

Last June (?) I believe, Amanda did a week long photo trip to this area and came back with lots of cool images of the surroundings including some of those featured in the video. It a bit of a drive from where I live, but I'm going to have to make that trek one of these days soon. As much as this Californian loves the Pacific Ocean, Redwoods, Sierra, and wine country, there is just something about the high desert of southern California that is of great photographic interest to me (and quite a few others). So Mike, please stop making me wish I'd scheduled a spring trip down south, ok?

Mike, really like the B&W version. Keep those images coming. RoseMary, your subject always look so comfortable and your use of light brings out the best in each one. You are a Pro and it shows.

Great start guys. Cheers JIMBO

An excellent series on those cars. Rust is a great subject all by itself but, toss in some old cars and you've got a real subject to work with. I'm liking the Olds and Old Ride a lot. Nice change of pace for you Jim. Well done.

Last week at my wife's insistence, I attended a drumming circle at a local cafe. It was a lot of fun.

Getting direction from the leader.

Had to get a shot of the photographer at work. He wanted this shot as he never gets ones of him at work.
