Thanks once again to Sprucehill for hosting another great TW3 - there were so many wonderful pictures and once again I'm honored to have been picked to host the next challenge.

The rules are here.

I was thinking recently of starting a thread called something like "My Place" or "My Town" where, much like our Reporting from China thread, we might post images displaying scenes from our locale. So how about having that for a loose theme for this TW3.

My Place or My Town - This suggested theme consists of shooting images of things in your general vicinity. How far would that be? That's really for you to decide. I suggest that you try to show images the characterize where you live, that could be your house, your town, a park, iconic feature, or nearby countryside. Oh, and if you don't care for this theme, well post away (as you see fit) anyway.

So, how 'bout it?

TW3.74 begins.

I took a hike last evening up to Cataract Creek near Mt. Tamalpais. There was much to see along the rigorous trail which passes a number of falls, ponds, and other delights.

This spot was tough to access, in fact I slipped off the steep wet rock and fell into the rushing fall to get here, but the view looking down the falls was worth it. Thanks to my new friend Mike who saved my camera from an untimely demise and helped pull me back up the rock when my meager handholds proved inadequate.

Nice shot Mike and I'm beginning to think you need a wet suit and underwater housing for your camera on your photo shoots. No doubt you are committed to your craft though. Well done.

thanks guys. i am really feeling it today in the twisted ankle i suffered to jump onto the rock to get to this spot. The falls behind me were rather impressive, but from the designated trail, there was simply no clean shot due to some tree cover blowing in the wind. I decided to hop the fence and go down the hillside, crossing the torrent to a rocky island in the middle of the falls. When i finally got there after a frightful yet refreshing dip, i looked down the falls at this scene and i was hooked!

The limitations of camera versus human eye/brain become apparent when staring at such a stimulating vista. Just how can one funnel all that information into a little rectangular image? The image you see here is a blend of 21 total frames. 7 pano frames of 3 bracketed exposures each. I processed the bracketed shots in photomatix and stitched them using Hugin and finally re-processed the frames normally (no tonemapping) and blended those back into the HDR composite to remove some of the "fantasy cartoon" look. I didn't like the tonemapping of the distant backdrop of trees, so that is all standard processed, then fading into tonemapping for the lower half of the frame which was much darker by comparison, btw. Given the extreme range of EV, HDR was a requirement here.

did i lose ya? anyhow, i may tweak it a little but am very pleased with the result and cannot wait for next winter's rains to return to this amazing place.

The title is a little goofy, but I was contemplating how manufactured goods get to market; Mother Nature uses a similar approach.

oooh my ankle!

You are definitely dedicated to your art Mike!
Your 'Distribution Channel' is something else.
Your PP is complicated and the results paid off.
That's more effort and talent in one picture than I put into a month's worth of photography.
Great Picture!

Well, I think Jay put my thoughts out already on these Mike. I do love the look you've applied to the last two. In particular Pt. Bonita has some very wonderful feel to it with the strong but controlled contrasts and the lovely whites of the lighthouse versus the sea. Very well done.

thanks! that was the last light on the lighthouse as the sun sunk beneath the offshore marine layer. The real kick was being in this spot however, high at the edge of the cliff...and to get a cleaner comp i had to go over the safety fence to get a little further west. I kept low but it was quite a thrill.

OMG Mike except for a slight bit of movement in the bottom plant, that is just amazing a full size. Great shot and concept.

thanks. i had to use 13sec exposure for the foliage and there was a breeze blowing through, so there was some motion blur.

Really didn't want to focus on that point as the whole image is really just awesome. That's more my point.
