We went to the 200th anniversary of the founding of Ft. Ross on the Sonoma Coast of California. It was the only part of the United States (excepting Alaska) which from 1812 to early 1840's was under Russian control. This was a fun event with many actors in character (and many Russians attending). Here are a few from the day.

The Hirty-Girty man.

Love the old station Frank. It certainly has a frontier look to it. Too bad it's being demolished. Our downtown train station is soon to be our farmers market.
Also, due to some stupid putzing around I did with the camera recently, all my shots were accidentally captured in JPG format instead of DNG, so there was very little room left for post-processing. I feel so stupid...

Been there - done that. If it's any comfort I've done dumber things with a camera. How bout going on a once-in-a-lifetime trip and seeing frame numbers 37, 38, 39 count up while you know it's only a 36 frame roll? The damn film didn't get started on the take-up spool. I felt sick! Our DSLR's have a myriad of settings and it's easy to miss one of them - even if it is as important as capturing raw images with each shot. Relax, at least you remembered to insert an SD card! Just think, you've got many years left to make even more photographic faux pas. :p

Great time period shots Tim, reminds me of my childhood. :D
That is some funky guitar the long-haired dude is cranking. What the heck did it sound like?
Were there a lot of spectators? Looks like you were there on your lonesome.
Russians meet the Californios.
Just curious, but are the Russians the drab pair on the left or the two peacocks on the right?

Here is a link to the article in my local newspaper on the festival for Fort Ross. They said that Saturday saw 3,000+ there and from my perspective it must have been the same on Sunday. I wish I'd gone both days. The performers were excellent, we watched a youth group of some 30 performers from Moscow sing and dance. Wow were they cool, I have no idea what they were saying but it was very definitely Russian! Here is a shot of them.

That hirty-girty is a bizarre instrument. You crank it on the end and the other hand plays keys to make the sound so it's got droning sounds and a melody. I can't describe it really.

In the shot, the Russians were on the left and the Californios were on the right.

Wow, love the salt monster shot. Looks like some sort of descendent from the Star War's hut's. Good eye there.

my title is a play on BCB's, "The Way Up"

The Way Down

Also from Saturday's Night Eyes Photo Workshop, this is a view of Lombard St., looking toward Telegraph Hill. We were showing the students how to capture light trails, ie from moving cars.

Pablo: that "Magic Sunset" is very interesting! Is that a play on white balance to get those odd colours?

What a great job over the past couple of days. Stikl got a few hours to go so lets see if we can pack a few new in. Mike, I can see why you are involved in a work shop on night shooting. How long was the exposure on the last one. JIM
