One question, I find the DA50 to be just a little bit on the noisy side when focusing, is the DA35 similar?

Yes, quick shift would be nice but at least you can focus it even in AF mode unlike the FA 50 (or FA35) which is locked in AF mode.

So far I can't tell much on image quality - it has delivered a lot of good images - but I haven't really run it through a lot of paces. I have seen some things on focus that I've yet to attribute to the lens or my ineptitude at camera handling. It's a keeper.

The 35mm is quieter and faster-focusing than the 50mm.

The 35mm has a 90 degree focus throw, and an approximate 11:1 ratio on the auto-focus gear (almost 3 screw-drive turns from close to infinity).

The 50mm has a 180 degree focus throw, and an approximate 13:1 ratio on the auto-focus gear (6.5 screw-drive turns from close to infinity). So the auto-focus motor has to work longer and faster to accomplish the same work, hence the increased noise.

Also, the 35mm's entire front barrel extends when focusing close, whereas only the front element of the 50mm moves forward independently from the barrel (ie. the 35mm gets physically longer at close focus, while the 50mm stays the same overall length). Since you have the 50mm, you know what I'm referring to. It's hard to describe without pictures, I've never actually seen this kind of focus movement before.

Interesting.

I think the 50's got what amounts to and external/internal focusing deal, that's what I'd call it.

wow, lot's of new submissions!

@FP - Nice job capturing the new car! I like the sun reflection on the door panel of #1 Bug's Profile. Also, the sky in "Blue Sunset" is lovely! Speakin' of lovely, Ms. Tiffpix may have a future modeling career.

@tiff - i cant look at that eye in the first pic, yuckie. However, Howlin Good Time is excellent! And the DA 50, i didn't even know about this lens. Gonna need to see many more pics from it. congrats!!

@BCB - wait, you have this new 50mm lens too? wow. I like the striking colors of "Wavy Lines", very bold looking. I can't make much out of #2, i'm afraid, maybe if they were framed diagonally? Those from the church are quite nice, Tim! I like the alternate illumination of surfaces in "Roof Lines". More with the new 50 please!

keep 'em coming, folks!

Mike - I'm with you on TP's possible modeling career. I'm ready to buy one of those cars now too.
About the DA 50, when I'm done with it at the end of this month, I wouldn't mind a loan of it to you. Your thoughts with it compared to some of those razor sharp FA DA limited primes would be interesting. Just a thought.

Oh...one more thing, while I realize this thread is getting loaded with Pentax gear talk, I have to report that I picked up a excellent copy of the Pentax A 35-105 (nicknamed the 'stack of primes') lens. I had one of them several years ago and was too inexperienced then to know that it was one of those classic lenses that you hold onto and not sell off. It's a brick of a lens with all metal build is very reminiscent of all of my 645 and 6x7 lenes. I may shoot all next month with that puppy. Ok, end of tech rant.

I just sold my Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 !! I will regret this.
I listed it at $250 and someone snapped it up within 20 minutes of posting it.

Well, if you just need a 28mm lens, I have a few which if sold would not add up to even half of that price.

Since no decision has been reached yet, I'm gonna sneak a couple in after the deadline. Hopefully mikeSF doesn't realize what I've done :ninja:

I think sprucehill may have posted the winner with that second shot of his kids... that's a brilliant shot.

I wouldn't want to bias the host but I'm in agreement with you on that as well.

Edit: I meant to say that I liked your flags shot too. Cool way to show movement.

This is our WINNER...

Sprucehill
G'morning

OK, I wanted to make that very clear, lol. A really interesting moment and the processing is quite complimentary! Congrats Dan! Your entire set was very strong, in fact...

SECOND PLACE:
Spucehill
mischief

This is a great capture and has the composition and feel of a Norman Rockwell painting, IMO. Really cute one.

I also REALLY love this one:

tiffpix
Howling Good Time

tiff, that ol' dawg gets alot of lens time and this image is a very fine portrait. The pose and DOF really makes it for me, as does the processing.

Everyone had some great shots this week and I thank you for your participation. Over to you, Dan!
