Mastering Panning – Photographing Moving Subjects

One of the easiest ways to convey motion in a picture is by blurring some of the elements. Blurring the subject with a slow shutter speed is one popular method. Another method is blurring the scene while keeping subjects in focus by panning the camera during the shot. This is a much more advanced technique which requires practice. Darren Rowse shares with us some advice for improving this technique.

I’ve found that panning seems to work best with moving subjects that are on a relatively straight trajectory which allows you to predict where they’ll be moving to. Objects that are moving side to side are challenging and can result in messy looking shots as the motion blur can be quite erratic.
