Lighting a Landscape at Night

Royce Bair has a flair for shooting landscapes at night. Strobist details a few of his secrets and how you too could try this type of photography for not that much money up front. It does involve some "older" technology however, remember those old single-use flash bulbs? They still exist, and they still work as intended.

Strobist writes:

There are no AC plugs near Delicate Arch in Grand County, Utah, where Royce Bair made this night landscape shot. So all of his flashes needed to be battery-powered to illuminate the 20-meter tall formation.You old farts more seasoned folks know where I am going with this. Bair's big gun, fired from camera left, was a single-use flash bulb. (Or in this case, two single-use flash bulbs.)
